Live-Action ‘Christmas Balloon’ Movie in the Works at Mattel Films
Mattel Films is developing a live-action family drama titled “Christmas Balloon,” based on a real-life story involving Mattel toys, the company announced Thursday. Gabriela Revilla Lugo (“A Million Little Things”) will write the original screenplay. “Christmas Balloon” centers on a young girl..
A dramedy feature/TV writer/director/producer and formerly undocumented immigrant, Gabby Revilla Lugo started her career in physical production. She worked for Martin Short on his award-winning Broadway show, Fame Becomes Me, and sharpened her comedy chops there. Gabby then ventured into the independent feature space where she worked with names like Damian Chazelle on his award-winning film, Whiplash. Eventually, she went on to have a successful film career with films including the award-winning hit Palm Springs, Melissa McCarthy's Netflix indie, The Starling, and Fox Searchlight's Next Goal Wins, written and directed by Taika Waititi. Gabby’s writing career took off after graduating from both the Fox Writers Program and The Disney Writers Program. She was staffed on ABC's hit drama, A Million Little Things, and also began teaching screenwriting at the ScriptAnatomy school. In 2021 Gabby sold multiple podcasts and landed a feature film writing job for Mattel and has multiple shows in development including one with Gina Rodriguez and Eugenio Derbez. She most recently sold a yet-to-be-announced TV pilot based on a beloved 1980’s IP to a major streamer, alongside UCP and OJALA, which is led by award-winning playwright, Tanya Saracho. She is also working with Tanya on the TV series Brujas and was recently accepted to the WGA's showrunner training program. Lugo is excited to continue telling Latine stories that exemplify more than just our collective trauma.
